The seventh phase of Pakistan's upcoming elections kicks off in Islamabad today, with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) set to unveil the revised list of candidates. Following the conclusion of appeals against Returning Officers' decisions in the previous phase, the ECP will release the final list of candidates.
ISLAMABAD – The seventh phase of Pakistan's upcoming elections is set to commence today, Wednesday, with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) expected to release the revised list of candidates participating in the elections.
Following the conclusion of the previous phase, where appeals were considered by appellate tribunals against Returning Officers' (RO) decisions, the electoral body will now unveil the final list of candidates.
Last month, data from the ECP on nominations for the general elections indicated that 28,626 submissions were received by the ROs for the general and reserved seats in the five assemblies.
On Saturday, electoral symbols will be allocated, coinciding with the publication of the final list of candidates on the same day.
As the 240 million-strong country heads to the polls, the upper house of parliament passed a non-binding resolution urging a delay in the national general elections. This decision was based on concerns about current security conditions and harsh winter weather.
The Senate emphasized that politicians are facing serious threats to their lives, and extreme winter conditions are making it challenging for political parties to conduct effective campaigns.
Initially scheduled for November of the previous year after the dissolution of the lower house of parliament in August, the general elections were postponed as the ECP and other institutions deemed more time necessary for the redrawing of constituencies and other essential changes.
