Survey identifies 31 buildings across Karachi with parking space for 5,000 vehicles

KARACHI: The Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has identified at least 31 buildings in the city with capacity of providing parking space for around 5,000 vehicles.

In a report prepared on the orders of the city's Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi to improve the flow of traffic, the SBCA conducted a survey disclosing the presence of these 31 commercial and trade centres which are being illegally used across the city.

In light of the survey, it was noted that if these parking spaces are to be used for the purpose of only parking vehicles, the city's traffic woes will lessen and citizens will also be able to utilise the parking facilities without any hassle.

As per the report, the parking areas of ​​all these buildings are being used for commercial and other purposes. The parking space of at least 20 buildings is being utilised as shops, godowns and for other commercial purposes.

It added that the parking area in three buildings have been converted into mosques, while shops were set up in 10 other buildings.

Parking areas of three buildings remain closed due to dilapidated condition.

In the city's south district, parking area of seven buildings is being used illegally, while usage violation has also been noted in the old city area from MA Jinnah Road to Abdullah Haroon Road, the report added.

Violation of parking area was also documented in at least eight buildings in district east, while the parking area of ​​three buildings is being used illegally in the central district as well.
