Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has arrived in Saudi Arabia following his self-imposed exile in London spanning four years.
During his week-long stay in Saudi Arabia, Sharif will embark on an Umrah pilgrimage with his family members and close associates. He is scheduled to depart for Dubai on October 17 or 18, and subsequently head to Pakistan after a three-day visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
A chartered plane, capable of accommodating up to 150 passengers, will transport Sharif back to Pakistan on October 21.
Sharif had been granted bail on medical grounds shortly after receiving a seven-year prison sentence for corruption. Although he departed for London in November 2019 for medical treatment, he did not return to Pakistan to serve his jail term, despite assurances to Pakistani courts regarding his return post-treatment.
In anticipation of his return on October 21, Sharif’s political party, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), is making preparations to rally a significant number of people at the airport to welcome him.
